Heart and Heritage of Georgia's Mountains

Head north from Atlanta toward Helen and the Sautee and Nacoochee Valleys to start your adventure. Approaching the Sautee and Nacoochee Valleys, drive past the Nacoochee Indian Mound.

Stop by the Old Sautee Store on your way to the Sautee Nacoochee Center on Highway 255.

At the center, wander down to the new Folk Pottery Museum of Northeast Georgia, showcasing a 200-year tradition of folk pottery and a collection of more than 200 items crafted by members of the Meaders, Hewell, Dorsey, Ferguson and Crocker families and apprentices they trained in traditional methods. Pick up a map to the Folk Potters Trail of Northeast Georgia.

Take GA 384 and plan to do some shopping, as well as checking out some unusual handmade items. Stop at the Gourd Place where you'll see beautiful items made from and inspired by gourds as well as a small museum of gourds from all over the world.

Visit the Edelweiss German Inn and see sausages and bratwurst being made. If you love these wonderful meats, plan to take some home with you.  

Continue north on Highway 255. Discover the Stovall Mill Covered Bridge as you continue to Georgia Highway 197 and turn north or south to find potteries, galleries, and lunch options at such historic locations as the Batesville General Store.

Drive south to Clarkesville. Plan a visit to the historic Mauldin House near the Square, then browse shops around the square. Also take time to explore the arts and crafts stalls at Old Clarkesville Mill.

Drive north along old U.S. Hwy 441 and turn west on Bear Gap Road for a delectable dinner at Glen Ella Springs Country Inn.
